Fındıkkıran Bale Gösterisi/ The Nutcracker

2015'in ilk yazısına başlamadan önce herkesin yeni yılını kutlamak istiyorum. Umarım bu yıl bütün dileklerinizin gerçekleştiği, mutluluk dolu bir yıl olur sizin için diyerek yavaş yavaş konuya giriyorum :) Fındıkkıran Balesi için en sevdiğim bale gösterisi desem hiç abartmamış olurum sanırım. İzlediğinizde gerçekten sizi bambaşka hayallere taşıyan bir gösteri.

Before starting on the first post of 2015, I would like to wish everyone a happy new year. I hope this year will be the year which all your dreams come true and will be a year full of happiness :) With that being said, I want to get into the subject. I seriously wouldn't think that I am exaggerating when I say that nutcracker is my favorite ballet by far. It is definitely a show that carries you through so many dreams.

Ben bu gösteriyi geçen sene 16 Ocak tarihinde izleme fırsatı buldum ki gösteri konusu, dekoru, kısacası tüm kurgusu ile aslında tam bir kış oyunu. Hatta özellikle de noel zamanı için harika diyebilirim. Sahnenin tam ortasında tüm görkemiyle beliren devasa noel ağacı hala gözümün önünde..

I found the opportunity to watch this show on 16th of January last year which is quite nice because this is a wintery type of ballet for sure. Especially for christmas time, I can still picture that giant christmas tree appearing in the middle of the stage, such a beautiful moment..

Kraliyet Opera Evi'nde izlemiş olduğum bu gösterinin yapımı hakkında söylenebilecek pek fazla şey yok sanırım. Görsel bir şölen yaratılması gereken bu balenin hak ettiği tüm imkanlar kullanılmış ve emekler belli ki verilmişti. Özellikle de birbirinden farklı bir sürü tema içeren bu bale, dekor ve kostüm anlamında oldukça fazla emek gerektiriyor ve her tema için tek kelimeyle söylenebilecek şey: muhteşem! Kesinlikle her sahne için özenilmiş ve en ince ayrıntısına kadar her şey düşünülmüş. Diğer bir bahsetmek istediğim konu tabii ki besteler. Fındıkkıran Balesi'nin, Tchaikovsky'nin en meşhur eserlerinden biri olduğu söylenebilir. Öyle ki balenin tamamını izlememiş de olsanız, eminim ki kulağınızın aşina olduğu "Ben bu ezgiyi bir yerden hatırlıyorum.." hissini yakalayacağınız kesin. Bütün temalardan tek tek bahsetmeyeceğim ama her bestenin, ait olduğu temayı harika bir şekilde yansıttığı kuşkusuz. İşte bu yüzden aslında Fındıkkıran için şunu söyleyebilirim: Arkadaşlarınız, aileniz .. bale ile arası çok iyi olmayan ya da henüz baleyle tanışmamış tanıdıklarınız için kesinlikle en mükemmel "baleyle tanışma" eseri. Görsel, işitsel ve kurgusal olarak kişiyi en iyi içine çekebilecek eserlerden biri olduğuna inanıyorum Fındıkkıran Balesi'nin.

I don't think there is much to say about the production of this ballet which I attended in Royal Opera House. Apparently all the efforts were spent and opportunities were used in order to create a visual feast which this ballet deserves. Especially if all the different themes are considered, it is clear that in terms of decor and costumes requirements are really high, and if I can just say one word about this whole thing, it would be "Fantastic!". Every detail of every scene was thought deeply. Another subject that I'd like to talk is of course compositions. It can be said that Nutcracker is one of the most famous ballets of Tchaikovsky. It is so famous that I can guarantee you that even if you are a person who never watch the entire show, you'll get the feeling of familiarity and say "I know this tune from somewhere.." I am not going to go through all of the themes. However I can surely say that every composition represents its theme perfectly. That is why I think this is the perfect show for those who are not the biggest ballet fans or for those who have never experienced ballet before. It is the perfect "Meeting with ballet" show in my opinion because I believe, with its visual, audial and fictional aspects, it is a masterpeice which can pull anyone in.

İzlediğim gösteriye dair özel olarak söyleyebileceğim ise Clara ve Sugar Plum Fairy karakterlerini canlandıran balerinlerin performanslarının ne kadar iyi olduğunu hatırladığım ve bu bale gösterisini izlediğim için ne kadar mutlu hissettiğim. Tekrar izleme şansım olsa gözüm kapalı tekrar izlerim diyebilirim. Bu yüzden sizlere de görmeniz için kesinlikle öneriyorum :)

As for the things I can specifically say for the show that I've seen, I can say that I remember how successful the ballerinas which were dancing as Clara and Sugar Plum Fairy. Also I want to say that I was feeling extremely happy after the show because of being able to watch such a production. I can say with my eyes closed that I would watch it again if I could, so I definitely recommend you to see the show too :)

Alice Harikalar Diyarında/ Alice's Adventures In Wonderland

Öncelikle yazıya bu Royal Opera House prodüksiyonu olan 2 perdelik bale gösterisini canlı izleyemediğim için duyduğum üzüntüyü belirterek başlamak istiyorum. Benim İngiltere'de bulunduğum süreçte denk gelemediğim bir yapım maalesef ki. Bu yapımı özel kılan şeylerden biraz bahsetmem gerekirse, öncelikle balenin direkt olarak kitaptan olmak üzere, sıfırdan başlanarak oluşturulması. Bunu dediğimde demeye çalıştığım şey aslında şu: Örneğin Fındıkkıran Balesi'ni veya Kuğu Gölü Balesi'ni ele alalım. Bu baleler yıllardır sergilenen, besteleri, karakterleri, kostümleri ve hatta sahne dekorlarına kadar belli olan, farklı opera & bale kurumları tarafından sergilendiklerinde minimal ölçüde değişiklik gösteren baleler diyebiliriz. (Matthew Bourne's Nutcracker'ı ayrı tutuyorum.) Fakat Alice Harikalar Diyarında için bu durum söz konusu değil çünkü baştan aşağı, sıfırdan başlayıp bir balenin yaratılması söz konusu.

I want to start by saying how sad I am because of not being able to see this Royal Opera House production live, unfortunately there was no show while I was in UK. One of the factors that makes this production special is that: this ballet being adapted directly from a book and the production started from scratch.What I mean by this is let's take Nutcracker of Swan Lake for instance. These ballet shows have been played for years with already known compositions, characters, costumes and even stage designs. They only show minor differences due to different productions. (Except Matthew Bourne's Nutcracker) However, in the case of Alice's Adventures In Wonderland, whole prodution is created from the beginning.

Bale müzikleri Joby Talbot tarafından yazılmış. Müziği duyduğunuzda kesinlikle gerçek dışı bir dünyada olduğunuz çağrışımını yaşıyorsunuz. Bu hissi güçlü bir şekilde uyandırabilmek içinde çan, arp, piyano, ince hafif metal sesi elde edilen çalgıların da bulunduğu bir grup enstrümandan yararlanmış. Sahne dekoru ise yine sihir dolu bir dünyayı çağrıştıracak şekilde Bob Crowley tarafından dizayn edilmiş. Oldukça başarılı bulduğumu söylemek zorundayım. Bütün dekor elementlerinin yanı sıra, 3 boyutlu efekti verilmiş animasyonlar da balede gerektiği yerleri bulmuşlar. Özellikle de balede Alice'in tavşan deliğinden düştüğü, büyüdüğü, küçüldüğü sahneler ve benzerleri göz önüne alınırsa, animasyonun baledeki önemi daha iyi anlaşılabilir. Bu anlamda oldukça başarılı bir iş çıkardıklarını düşünüyorum. Görsel olarak oldukça doyurucu bir bale olduğu kesin.

Ballet music is composed by Joby Talbot. When you hear the sound, you definitely get the feeling of being in a surreal world. In order to make people feel this way,  Talbot says that he used tuned percussion instruments, bells, tinkly things, celeste, piano and harps. As for the stage design, Bob Crowley is the designer of this highly magical appearance. I have to say that he did such a successful job. In addition to all decor elements, 3D animations also found their place in the show. Especially if the scenes where Alice falls down through the rabbit hole, she shrinks and grows, importance of animations in this ballet can be clearly understood. I can definitely say that they did a fantastic job and the ballet is very satisfying in terms of visuality as it is satisfying in general.

Prodüksiyondan çıkıp biraz balet ve balerinlerin performansından bahsetmem gerekirse 3 karakter ile ilgili yazmak istediklerim var. Öncelikle favori karakterim Queen of Hearts'tan başlamak istiyorum. Zenaida Yanowski tarafından canlandırılan bu karakter tartışmasız ki 2. perdenin açılışında oldukça öne çıkıyor. Hatta o kadar öne çıkıyor ki, benim bu baleye karşı ilk olarak ilgimin olmasına ve DVD'yi Royal Opera House'tan koşa koşa gidip almama sebep olan aşağıda paylaşacağım video 'da ne kadar eğlenceli bir bale olduğunun sinyallerini veriyor.

If I need to talk about performers in more detail, I would like to mention 3 characters exclusively. First I want to start with my favorite character Queen of Hearts. This character (played by Zenaida Yanowsky) outshines at the very beginning of Act 2. She outshines so much that she is the reason why I was interested in this ballet and I bought the DVD in the first place. Performance can be seen below:

Balenin koreografı Christopher Wheeldon'ın da dediği gibi, Zenaida Yanowsky oldukça teatral bir kişilik ve özellikle de Queen of Hearts karakterini oynadığı bölümlerde bu özelliği ile çokça öne çıktığını söyleyebiliriz. Bir diğer favori karakter ise kitapta Mad Hatter olarak geçen fakat balede çok başarılı bir şekilde uyarlandığını düşündüğüm Mad Tapper. Steven McRae tarafından canlandırılan bu karakter kesinlikle bu bale gösterisine tap dansıyla yeni bir soluk getirmiş ve oldukça eğlenceli bir boyut katmış. Son olarak bahsetmek istediğim, tabii ki de balenin ana karakteri Alice, Lauren Cuthbertson. İzlediğiniz zaman gerçekten kendisini karakteriyle özleştirmiş olduğunu görebiliyorsunuz. Mimiklerine kadar o anı yaşadığını, o an gerçekten o Harikalar Diyarı'nda olduğuna sizi inandırabiliyor.

As the choreographer Chrsitopher Wheeldon says, Zenaida Yanowsky is a deeply theatrical ballerina and this feature of hers can be seen especially when she plays the character Queen of Hearts. Another favorite character of mine is the one who is mentioned as Mad Hatter in the book but adapted as Mad Tapper in the ballet. Played by Steven McRae, this character definitely brings a different vibe to the show by the tap dance factor and adds another dimension to the ballet. Last but not least I'd like to mention the main character Alice played by Lauren Cuthbertson. She definitely gives you the feeling that she identifies herself as Alice in the show. You can see that she lives the moment from her gestures and at that moment, she makes you believe that you are actually in wonderland.

Gerçekten görsel bir şölen olan bu baleyi DVD'den de olsa severek izledim. Bana denk gelmese de İngiltere'de bu sene tekrar sergilenmeye başlayacak olan bu baleyi görmek isteyenler 6 Aralık - 16 Ocak arasında Royal Opera House'ta izleyebilirler. Şimdilik hoşçakalın :)

Honestly I watched this visual feast from the DVD and I loved it! Even if I missed it, this show is coming back soon and for people who are interested in seeing this ballet, the time is between 6th of December and 16th of January :)
