Long time no see, hello again everyone :) After all the events I've attended and failed to write on this blog, I wanted to make a come back with hands down one of my favorite movies of all time: Amadeus. I was always curious about Movies in Concert events of Zorlu PSM and it litterally felt like ages for me to wait until I finally booked the tickets for the show on February, 25th.
Etkinliğe geçmeden önce spoiler vermeden filmden biraz bahsetmek istiyorum. 1984 yapımı ve 8 Oscar ödüllü Amadeus, bana göre 'Mozart'ın müzikal dehası bir filme en iyi şekilde nasıl işlenir?' sorusunun cevabıdır diyebilirim. Fakat filmin asıl etkileyici noktası, müziği hayatındaki herşeyin ötesinde tutan Salieri'nin, Mozart'ın dehası yüzünden çektiği acılarla ve yaptıklarıyla kendi hayatını ve Tanrı'yı sorgularken, benzerine az rastlanabilecek bir empati yaşatmasıdır. Kıskançlık ve hayranlığın birbirine karıştığı, filmin en sevdiğim sahnesi için alttaki videoya bakabilirsiniz.

I want to talk about this movie (without spoilers) before sharing my views. In my opinion, this 1984 made movie with 8 Oscars is the answer of 'How can a musical genius like Mozart can be pictured in a movie?' question. However, most impressive aspect of the movie for me is the powerful emphaty it puts its audience into when Salieri, a man who puts music ahead of everything in his life suffers and questions his life and god because of the musical brilliance of Mozart. My favorite scene in the movie which captures the moment of 'jealousy and admiration fading into each other' can be seen below.
Etkinliğe gelecek olursak, filme olan beğenimden dolayı büyük beklentiler içinde olduğumu ifade etmeme sanırım gerek yok. Aslında aklımda hep 'Filmle aynı anda mı eserleri dinleyeceğiz?' yoksa 'Filmi belirli bir süre durduracaklar ve eserleri daha uzun duyabilecek miyiz?' gibi sorular vardı gitmeden önce. Gösterim başladı ve film akışı bozulmadan bir konser programı oluşturulduğunu anladım. Bu durum bende herhangi bir önyargı yaratmadı, canlı orkestra performansı ile filmi izlemek tabii ki ayrı bir zevkti fakat beklentimin karşılandığını söyleyemeyeceğim. Eserleri orkestra tabii ki çalıyordu ve ellerine, emeklerine sağlık demek istiyorum öncelikle fakat ses sisteminin yetersizliği miydi yoksa başka bir teknik konu ile mi alakalıydı bilemiyorum, sanki filmin üzerine çalıyor gibiydiler ve akustik anlamda çok tatmin olamadım. Orkestranın performansı salonu yeterince doldurmuyordu ve maalesef %100 canlı bir konser deneyimi yaşatmıyordu. Filmin özellikle 'Saraydan Kız Kaçırma Operası' gibi sahnelerinde bu his iyice tırmandı çünkü filmdeki primadonna'nın sesini duyuyorduk ve bu demek oluyordu ki orkestra yine film müziğinin üzerine çalıyordu.

Needless to say I had high expectations from this event because I am a huge fan of the movie. In fact, I was asking myself 'Will it be simultaneous?' or 'Will they stop the movie for a bit and let us admire the pieces longer than the movie?' all the time. When it began, I understood that the program was set according to movie which by the way did not cause a prejudice. Experiencing a live orchestra and movie screening at the same time was a pleasure but unfortunately my expectations were not met. First of all I want to clear the air and say that the orchestra indeed performed the whole time, very well done, appreciate the effort. However due to sound system or another technical issue, it felt like they were playing over the movie and it was acoustically not pleasing. Sounds coming from the orchestra did not fill the auditorium and it didn't give me a 100% concert experience. Especially in opera scenes such as 'Die Entführung aus dem Serail' I had this feeling even more because we heard the voice of primadonna in the movie which meant again that orchestra was playing over the sounds of movie.
Bu hayal kırıklığı, benim yüksek beklentimin de bir sonucu olabilir tabii ki fakat ilk defa mutlaka gidin, kesin görün diyemiyorum. Bunu dediğim için çok kötü bir etkinlik olduğu anlaşılmasın, sadece Zorlu PSM'nin Movies in Concert kapsamında uyguladığı fiyat politikası göz önünde bulundurulunca daha tatmin edici bir gösterim olmasını bekliyordum. Operadaki Hayalet, Mamma Mia, Romeo e Giulietta gibi opera/müzikal prodüksiyonları fiyatını kesinlikle çıkarsa da bir daha Movies in Concert kapsamındaki etkinliklerine gideceğimi sanmıyorum. Yine de filmi seven, klasik müzik dinleyen kişilerin her türlü güzel bir akşam geçirmesini sağlar nitelikteydi.

This disappointment may be the result of my high expectations but for the first time I can't suggest you to go and see this event. Don't get me wrong, it is not the worst experience ever but considering the ticket prices set by Zorlu PSM, I was expecting it to be more satisfying. Opera and musical shows of Zorlu PSM such as Phantom of the Opera, Mamma Mia, Romeo e Giulietta are definitely worth to see for but I don't think I'll be attending a Movies in Concert event again. Still for those who like the movie and enjoys classical music, it was a pleasant evening.
