Bugün bahsetmek istediğim deneyim yazının başlığından da anlaşılacağı üzere Wicked Müzikali hakkında. Öncelikle canım arkadaşım/ kardeşim İpek'e bu müzikali görme teklifiyle gittiğimde hevesimi paylaşması ve bununla da kalmayıp müzikal biletimi ısmarladığı için bu yazıda teşekkür etmek istiyorum. Müzikal gününe dönmem gerekirse, Londra' da müzikal deneyimi yaşamak isteyen kişilere yardımı olacağını düşündüğüm bir kaç ipucuyla yazıma devam etmek istiyorum. Öncelikle matineler her zaman akşam şovlarından daha uygun fiyatlı oluyorlar. Yani oldukça uygun fiyatlara bilet bulabilmek, şovu gündüz izleme şansınız varsa oldukça kolay. Buna ek olarak, müzikal günü İpek ve benim yaptığım gibi müzikalin oynandığı tiyatro binasına, şova yaklaşık 1 saat kala gidip son dakika bileti şeklinde gişeye sorduğunuz zaman, biletler daha bile uygun fiyata düşebiliyor. Mümkün olduğunca az maliyetli ve spontane planlar seviyorsanız tam sizlik yani :) Bizim durumumuzda müzikal Apollo Victoria Theatre' da oynanıyordu ve bu tiyatro Victoria metro istasyonundan (doğru kapıdan dışarı çıkarsanız) çıktığınızda karşınızda oluyor, yani ulaşım oldukça rahat. Bileti alıp biraz dışarıda dolaştıktan sonra tiyatro binasına geri döndük ve kendi aramızda komiklikler-şakalar.(yazının yararlılığı ve ciddiyeti bakımından buraya çok fazla değinmeyeceğim :) )

Today, as it can be understood from the title, the experience that I want to talk about is Wicked Musical. First of all I want to thank my best friend/ sister İpek for sharing my enthusiasm when I first mentioned that I wanted to see this show and also thank her for buying me my ticket. If I need to talk about the day of the musical, I think it makes sense to mention a few of tricks about watching a musical as affordable as possible. To start with, matinee show tickets are always cheaper in comparison to soiree show tickets. So if you have a chance to watch the shows in day time, it is really easy to find cheaper tickets. In addition to this, if you go to the theatre building 1 hour before the show starts as me and İpek did, you may be able to find "last minute tickets" which are also relatively cheaper than regular tickets. So if you are a type of person that enjoys spontaneous and affordable plans, this is just the perfect situation for you :) In our case the show was in Apollo Victoria Theatre which is right across the road if you take the right exit from the Victoria Rail Station, so it is a really easy place to visit. After buying the ticket and walking around, we returned to theatre an the rest is funny chats until the beginning of the show. (In order to maintain the usefulness and semi-seriousness of this writing, I will not mention this chatting section in more detail :) )

Salona girdiğimiz anda sahnenin tepesinde asılı kocaman bir ejderha maketi bizi karşıladı. Müzikale dair böyle dekor detaylarını görmek, kesinlikle şov hakkında daha çok heyecanlanmamı sağlayan bir unsur, hele ki ejderha, baya bir heyecanlandırdı kuşkusuz. Dediğim gibi sohbet ederek zamanı da geçirince şov başlangıç zamanı geldi çattı.

The moment when we stepped in, a giant dragon figure greeted us. In my opinion, seeing those tiny bit of decor details of the show makes me even more excited. Especially the dragon .. an excitement factor indeed. As I said the time passed while we were chatting and all of a sudden it was the time for this musical to start.
Bu noktada müzikalin konusundan biraz bahsetmem gerektiğini düşünüyorum çünkü aslında yeni sayılabilecek bir müzikal ve konu orijini her ne kadar Oz Büyücüsü kitabına dayanıyor da olsa, çok çok farklı bir açıyla ve hikayeyle bir anlatım ve işleyiş söz konusu. Hepimizin "Eriyoruuum, eriyoruuum!" anıyla hatırlayabileceğimiz Batı'nın Lanetli Cadısı ve balonunun içinde süzüle süzüle gelen İyi Cadı Glinda' nın aslında bir geçmişi vardır ve işte müzikal tam olarak da bu iki cadının tanışma evresi ve sonrasında geçer. Müzikali anlatıp tabii ki de izlemek isteyenlere kötülük yapmayacağım ama şovun konusuyla ilgili son söylemek istediğim şey belki de her şeyin bize anlatıldığı gibi olmadığı.

At this point, I have the feeling that it is going to be usefull if I explain the topic of the musical because it is a relatively new musical and even if the topic is based on Wizard of Oz book, the way that is it explained in the musical is different and interesting. The musical time passes when the Wicked Witch of West who we all may be remember with the "I'm meltiiiing, I'm MELTIIING!" moment and Glinda the Good Witch who shows up in a bubble first met. Of course I don't want to tell the whole story and give spoilers but the last thing I can say based on the topic is: Maybe things are not the way as they seem ..
Ve konudan çok fazla şaşmak istemesem de, çağımız animasyon filmi Shrek' e bile (yalnız 10 sene geçmiş üstünden inanamıyorum!) ilham kaynağı olabilmiş. İlgili kısım için 1.59

I don't want to be out of topic really but I need to mention this because it makes me laugh so hard everytime I see this. Even in the movie Shrek you can see the influences of Wicked Witch of the West, can be seen on 1.59
Konudan biraz bahsettikten sonra oyuncular ve müzikal ile ilgili aklımda kalan detaylardan biraz bahsetmek istiyorum. Ekip zaman zaman değişimlere uğramış olsa da, bizim izlediğimiz tarihte Batı'nın Lanetli Cadısı (Elphaba) Kerry Ellis, İyi Cadı Glinda ise Savannah Stevenson tarafından canlandırılmış. Şunu söylemek zorundayım ki Wicked müzikali ile ilgili ilk etkinliğimdi (Her ne kadar kitaplarını edinmek ve okumamak gibi bir saçmalık yapmış olsam da) ve bu yüzden, oyunculukları, karakterleri detaylı eleştirebilecek bir birikimim olduğunu düşünmüyorum. Fakat böyle bir müzikali ilk defa deneyimleyen ve belirli bir beklentiyle gitmeyen biri olarak söyleyebileceğim şey izlerken çok zevk aldığım. Elphaba ve Glinda karakterlerinin ikisi de kişilik ve müzikal açısından başarılı bir şekilde yansıtılmıştı benim kanımca. Onun dışında hatırladığım sahne dekorunun ne kadar başarılı olduğuydu. Filmdeki Oz Büyücüsü projeksiyonunu hatırlarsınız. Böyle bir efekti, müzikalde hakkıyla verebilmek oldukça zor olsa gerek, Glinda' nın baloncuk içinde gelişi vb. Ben müzikal sahne dekorlarının ve sahne efektlerinin çok başarılı bir şekilde tasarlandığını düşünüyorum.

After talking about the topic, it may be good to mention characters and things that I mostly remember on the show. Although cast changes all the time, on the date we watched the musical, the Wicked Witch of West (Elphaba) was played by Kerry Ellis and Glinda the Good Witch was played by Savannah Stevenson. I have to say that this was my very first event related with Wicked (Because I was such a genious - serious irony here- that I bought the books and didn't read them) so I definitely don't see myself as someone who can criticize the actors and characters in detail. However I can say that, as someone experiencing this musical for the first time and as someone who doesn't have a certain expectation, I enjoyed the show very much. Both Elphaba and Glinda characters were presented very successfully in terms of musicality and personality. Another thing that I remember is that how amazing the stage decor was. You may remember the projection scene of Wizard of Oz and the scene where Glinda comes in a floating bubble. I think it must be really hard to give such effects in a musical theatre show and I think they definitely succeeded.

Müzikleri için zaten söylenebilecek fazla bir şey yok. Defying Gravity ve Popular bölümleri, artık Wicked deyince direkt akla gelen, kült hale gelmiş şarkılar. Hatta "Popular", popüler kültüre dahi yansıyıp MIKA ve Ariana Grande ortaklaşa çalışması olarak karşımıza çıkmış durumda bile.

In terms of music, there is really not much to say. Defying Gravity and Popular sections have already become cult songs that come in mind when someone mentions Wicked musical. Even more, "Popular" even influenced current song culture and showed up as a song of MIKA and Ariana Grande.
Defying Gravity ise kesinlikle başlı başına ayrı bir yıldız performans. Şarkının gerektirdiği vokal yetenekler oldukça fazla ve dinlediğiniz zaman kesinlikle tüyleri diken diken ettiğini söyleyebilirim. Tabii anlam olarak taşıdığı önemin de bu etkide payı büyük. Sonuç olarak, karakterleriyle, oyuncularıyla, görsel ve işitsel şöleniyle bu müzikalin kesinlikle görülmesi gereken bir müzikal olduğunu düşünüyorum. Başarısı su götürmez bir gerçek olan bu müzikal şovun şuana dek kazanmış olduğu ödüllerin listesi için yazının sonunda bir link paylaşacağım. Umarım şova ilgisi olan kişilere, şovla ilgili bir şeyler ağzımdan kaçırmadan ufak da olsa bir fikir verebilmişimdir. Şimdilik hoşçakalın :)

As for Defying Gravity, it is definitely a show stopper. Vocal skills that this song requires are enormous and it certainly gives you goose bumps when you listen. Of course partial reason of this situation is also related with the significance of the scene. In conclusion, with its characters, performers, visual and audial feast, this is a must seen musical. Indisputable success of this musical can be seen in the following link which includes the award list. I hope I provided some general idea on the show without giving any spoilers :)
